Most of those who know me are aware that when I'm not being a crazy linux geek, I'm off being a sterotypical car geek. As part of this, I started working on a project car a few years ago with my dad and whilst its been slow progress, the light is finally at the end of the tunnel and we should have it on the road by the end of the year.
For this reason, I thought I'd throw up a couple of pictures of the progress we've made to show off our handiwork and so I can look back with nostalgia in my eyes years from now. I've included some pics of when we got the car too to give that oh-so-infommercial before and after look. ( Pics ) |

I've always been something of a closet grammar / punctuation nazi, albeit in a somewhat hypocritical manner at times (damn clumsy fingers). So today I got more excited than is probably normal upon discovering the interrobang. Simply put, the interrobang is a punctuation character that is used as a combination of ? and !. Now I've used the ?! or !? combination many times and whilst it perfectly conveys my emotions, I've never quite felt comfortable about having to use 2 symbols when one should suffice. Finally, I feel punctually complete. So, I give you the interrobang:
‽
So got forth and spread the good word about this most excellent of marks, for great justice as they say. For more info about the interrobang, the all knowing Wikipedia is an interesting read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interrobang
Edit: Its just come to my attention that IE refuses to display the interrobang in all its glory. All I can recommend is getting a real browser (http://getfirefox.com or http://apple.com/safari or similar)Current Music: Regurgitator - Metal is Big in the Baltic States

Well we've been back in the country for a few days now and had a chance to settle in once again (ie Go back to work). I've been meaning to get something down here to recount all the things that went on in the second two thirds of the trip, but there's so many that its all a bit overwhelming when I think about it.
For that reason, I've just put up a photoset of about 50 out of the 300 or so shots of the trip. They can be found at http://www.noisymime.org/gallery/. I apologise for the quality of some of them, camera played up (Admittedly after being dropped) and many of the photos from the first week or so ended up being taken on my phone. To rectify this I bought a new camera in Malaysia (Sony DSC-W90 for those interested in such things) which seems to have done a pretty good job for the later half of the trip. Enjoy.
Also, a big happy birthday to trentiusmaximus! |

Well its been an amazing last week. I've spent the last 5 days or so in Jakarta, but am now sweating it out in Singapore. Having had my time again, I think I'd probably have stayed a few more days in Indonesia, its hard to get sick of everything there. 1 thing I didn't realise before I went though is that, almost exclusively, the only internet available is dial-up. I even went to a Starbucks that was advertising free wifi, only to discover that whilst being free internet, it was sharing a single dial-up connection. Until I got to Singapore I haven't really had a chance to get anything down in LJ.
So onto the actual stuff:
One thing I am going to miss when I get home though is the food. I had a curry last night that cost $1 US that blew my mind. I've always been a fan of really spicy food, and chili based dishes are everywhere. I'm in heaven! Jakarta is a place where anything they can do themselves is dirt cheap, human labour seems to be worth very little there. Because of this you can get some incredibly fancy/boutique type foods for around a dollar or two and its some of the best quality I've ever had. Conversely, many things that we consider to 'staples' are very difficult to come by. Even things as simple as a loaf of bread are difficult to find.
Whilst its not a huge thing, the music in Jakarta is something that, more than once, tickled my funny bone. I was in a bakery at one stage and realised that there was a slow, Indonesian version of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters'. It was almost being chanted rather than sung and actually sounded really good. Another time I was standing around and heard a couple of Muse songs in a row. Now this was a small surprise, but nothing too out of the ordinary, except for the fact that I was in a baby shop. I asked the clerk about it and apparently they had no idea what the music was nor could they understand it, someone just thought it sounded good.
Alas, I have to cut this entry short as its time to go do stuff... Definitely more updates (including pics) on the way. |
| » Point release |
I thought I'd post something up here as its been a long time between updates. I've been writing more on my 'tech' blog lately (http://syndicated.livejournal.com/noisymime_blog/) so at least that proves that I haven't been completely dead to the world. For those interested in such things, I've begun work on a new project called Gloss which is an accelerated frontend for Mythtv. Details are on the blog above.
As far as non-geek things go, I'm off to Singapore and Indonesia next Wednesday for 2 and a bit weeks with mtl10. Just for a holiday, that is beginning to become desperately needed. I don't think I've take a day of leave since early February so it will be a welcome break. We don't plan on doing too much, just seeing the sites and catching up with some of Mel's family. We're heading off to the wedding of one of her cousins and apparently its being held in one of the swankiest joints in town which should provide for a good night out.
So that's about all the updates I have at the moment.
P.S. Happy birthday to m0rg0th, that'd make you about 22 right?

| » Die Hard 3: At the hands of a ghost |
Due to the fact that Die Hard 4(.0?) is out, I decided a rewatching of the previous movies was in order. My personal favourite has always been no. 3, I think it is a perfect mix of cornball action movie and relatively well written script / story. Upon rewatching it though, I discovered something else it in that I could love.
There's a scene about a third of the way in where Bruce and Samuel need to get across a large part of the NY CBD in an impossibly short period of time. The movie being what it is, Bruce appropriates a taxi and begins maniacly driving through central park sending poor joggers and picnic'ers scattering in his wake.
Whilst this itself is entertaining, the truly amusing part comes as a throw-away line from Willis (Possibly Jackson, hard to tell) that is only barely audible, but definitely there. As the yellow taxi lands after being launched off a ridge that no taxi should be launched from, its shown pointed squarely at a group of people dressed in white. At this moment, very quickly, you can here one of the duo going 'Waca Waca Waca'.
The reference may not be immediately obvious to everyone reading this, but it tickled my funny bone.

Well, what can I say about this weekend other than that its been both wonderful and yet monstrously draining. For those unaware, mtl10 and myself threw an engagement party on Saturday night / afternoon which seems to have been fair success. It was a fairly small affair with only family and close friends, although its amazing how quickly these (And the bill) seem to wind up.
So thankyou to everyone who happens to read this and came along. To anyone who we didn't invite, apologies but there is, unfortunately, a limit to both the size of our house and the size of our wallets (We did want more people and there's talk of a booze up at some point, so there's time yet)
Finally, I'd like to point out that, despite what ctudball has said, I think the slideshow function in Gloss seemed to work ok, despite 1 rather odd bug and tristanm doing his best to crash it :p

OK, I know I don't post on here nearly as often as I should and that doing a 2nd post about getting angry at gameshows is bordering on obsessive, but damn it, someone in society has some splainin to do.
Last time my rant was about Family Fued and its 'public survey' results. Tonight is along a similar line but from The Richlist. Now I'm not sure if these two high quality entertainment institutions purchase survey results from the same source, but the answers below make me wonder what the hell is going on in some peoples heads.
So without further filler: The category: The 30 most trustworthy professions The answer: Real Estate agents and, wait for it, telemarketers
Anyone who names telemarketers as being trustworthy deserve to be called by them, multiple times, every night, from now until the day they die.

I know society is dumb, but this just hit me as really pathetic
I was flicking channels and stopped on Family Fued until 6pm. OK, its a pretty stupid show, but they do have a section where the contestants answers are compared to answers from a 'random public survey'. Tonight, one of the questions was "Name a mythical creature with wings". Now there's a couple of obvious ones that sprung to mind, dragon, pegasus, griffin, HOWEVER the number 1 answer from the 'random survey' was none of these. I was shocked. Did Joe Sixpack really think of a more common mythical creature than these? Had I missed some obvious creature? Apprently not. The most common answer given for "A mythical creature with wings"...
A Unicorn.
I'm angry. I'm angry and I don't even know who to blame for this one.

| » Muse |
Well as has already been stated by ctudball Muse last night were awesome! My only complaint is that Festival Hall probably wasn't the best place for the show in my opinion. I'm not really sure what I can say that will convey how great the show was, so here's some poor quality pictures from my phone:
The first picture probably needs some explanation. All I can say is that changing a tire on the Westgate freeway is put, with certainty, on the list of things that aren't fun. Trucks are scary things.

Onto the concert pics...

Before it all started ctudball and myself were discussing whether or not we thought anybody that: a) We worked with b) We went to school with c) lives in Ballarat Was also at the concert. This centered around how good the music tastes of the people we know are and we were both fairly sure that, excluding people we KNEW weren't there, that there was no one we were likely to bump into that we knew. So with that conversation wrapped up, on the way out after the gig I ran into sischen who had actually been to the show the night before too, lucky bastard!
So that's the Muse story. I can say with certainty that whenever they are playing again in Melbourne that I'll be scurrying for tickets once again.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Hilltops Hoods in the headphones and much Google supplied liquor in the system, lovin it. I think from past experience that this is about the point when the week starts to ramp up and become memorable in addition to just enjoyable.
If only the rest of the year stayed at the same level....
Edit: Ohh yeah, beat Linus at pool. Not sure how big this news is.

So to quote the old adage, "When it rains it pours". Here's the bright shiny backyard at the new house:
 There's concrete under there somewhere
 And the grass
These are the towels we had under the garage door. It turned out the only way to clear the water was to open the rear roller door and push it all out the front.
This is my fave, something lovely and ironic about a watering can gently floating off.

| » Year in review |
Here is my year's worth of bests and worsts. I figure its probably the easiest way to remember things in a condensed form. Note that things here don't necesarily mean they came out in 2006, merely that I simply discovered them in 2006.
Song of the year: Butterflies and Hurricanes (Muse) Band of the year: Muse Movie of the year: V for Vendetta High of the year: New house (Everyone should come visit!) Low of the year: The car Software of the year: Democracy Hardware of the year: Macbook (Wii was a close 2nd, but I don't own one yet) Hardware letdown of the year: PS3 OS of the year: VERY close but will go with OSX (Kubuntu 2nd) OS disapointment of the year: IBM Linux Game of the year: World of Warcraft (I feel so lame for saying that) TV Show of the year: Top Gear
I'm sure I could go on forever, but I think that about wraps up the memorable things. Roll on 2007.
